German Apple Cake

German Apple Cake

This recipe courtesy of Sara Mann (a woman with excellent taste) via the Zion Cookbook. The cake is something like bread pudding and contains just the right amount of sweetness. Delicious!

2 eggs
2 C sugar
1 C oil
2 C flour, sifted
2 t cinnamon
1 t baking soda
1 t vanilla
1/2 t salt
4 C apples, peeled & thinly sliced
1/2 C walnuts

Preheat oven to 350. In a bowl, mix all ingredients together with a spoon–do not use a mixer. Batter will be stiff. Spread into a greased and floured 9×13 inch pan. Bake for 45 minutes.

Sauce:
1 stick margarine (or BUTTER!)
2 T flour
1/2 C half & half
1/2 C brown sugar
1/2 C white sugar

In a saucepan, mix ingredients and boil. Serve warm sauce over the cake.

  1. this sounds like an easy, yummy dessert. (gotta have apples in fall!) alas — i don’t have time to try it before leaving.. but i want to.

  2. It is easy and yummy. I can just imagine a German from Russia preparing the same dish in my house umpteen years ago. : )

Regarding the photo… Does anyone know how to make it smaller? Not that the HUGE helping of cake doesn’t reflect my eating habits precisely, but still… It’s a bit overwhelming.

  3. As a fellow WordPresser (and descendant of the Germans from Russia), I upload photos to a post after minimizing or exporting them to 500 pixels (horizontally). I’m guessing you have some kind of photo-editing software, but if not, Picasa is pretty great. And free!

  4. So that’s why you’re techno-savvy, Lindsey! It’s all that German-from-Russia blood. ; )

Thanks, R or J, for the photo resizing.

  5. Umm… just to clarify — the oven temp isn’t really 130, is it? Maybe 350?
I LOVE your new recipe blog! The photos are great, and the recipes are so appealing. I want to try them all!
